How to Choose an LED Desk Lamp

A good desk lamp makes long study or work sessions more comfortable. A poor one causes glare, shadows and tired eyes. This guide covers the points that matter most when choosing an LED desk lamp.

1. Adjustable brightness and colour

Look for a lamp with several brightness levels or smooth dimming. A warm light is easier to relax with in the evening, while a cooler light feels sharper during the day. Being able to change both is more useful than a single fixed setting.

2. Avoid glare

Glare comes from a bright light shining straight into your eyes or reflecting off your screen. Choose a lamp with an adjustable head so you can aim the light at your desk, not your monitor. If you work on a monitor most of the day, a monitor light bar sits on top of the screen and lights the desk below it without reflecting off the display.

3. Desk space

Small desks lose space quickly. A lamp with a slim base, or one that clips on or sits on your screen, leaves more room for your keyboard and notes.

4. Built-in extras

Some lamps include a USB port or a wireless phone charger in the base, so one object does two jobs and you need fewer cables. If you choose a wireless charger, check that your phone supports wireless charging.

5. Power

Check the power source, cable length and whether you need an adapter. Treat claims about eye protection carefully unless the seller explains exactly what they mean.
